Organise bookmarks with tags

Unlike folders, a bookmark can carry several tags at once — up to five. Tags live in the TAGS section of the sidebar.

Any of these work:

  • Click the + next to the TAGS heading in the sidebar.
  • Click the round + button at the bottom of the middle column, then New Tag.
  • On a Mac, press ⌘T — or use File ▸ New Tag.
  • From a bookmark’s Tags card, click Add Tag and choose New Tag….

Type a name, pick a colour, and click Create.

Tag names must be unique, ignoring case. A duplicate is refused with “A tag named “…” already exists.“

New tags are placed at the top of the list. A tag created from a bookmark’s Add Tag popover is attached to that bookmark immediately.

Either:

  • Select the bookmark, click Add Tag in the Tags card, and pick a tag. The popover lists only tags the bookmark does not already have.
  • Drag the bookmark from the middle column onto a tag row in the sidebar.
  • Drag a tag from the sidebar onto a bookmark row or card in the middle column.
  • On a Mac, click the × on the tag chip in the bookmark’s Tags card.
  • On iPad, touch and hold the tag chip and choose Remove Tag.

A bookmark can hold at most five tags.

Once it is full, the Add Tag button disappears from its Tags card. If you try to drag a sixth tag onto it, an alert appears:

Tag Limit Reached This bookmark already has the maximum of 5 tags.

Remove a tag before adding another.

  1. Click the tag in the sidebar to select it.
  2. Click it again. The name becomes an editable field.
  3. Type the new name and press Return.

Esc abandons the edit. Clicking away with unsaved changes prompts you to save or discard.

  1. Click the tag in the sidebar to select it.
  2. Click its tag icon to open the colour palette.
  3. Pick a preset, or use the colour well.
  4. Close the popover — the colour saves on dismiss.

Tag colours also feed the coloured header behind each bookmark’s icon, unless you have turned Use Gradient Headers for Bookmarks off in Settings.

Drag a tag row up or down within the TAGS section. A line shows where it will land.

This order applies to the sidebar and to the Safari extension’s tag list. It does not apply inside the app’s Add Tag popover or to the tag chips on a bookmark — those are always alphabetical.

Click the TAGS heading to collapse or expand it.

  • On a Mac, hover over the tag row until an × appears at the right, then click it.
  • Anywhere, use the row’s context menu and choose Delete Tag.

Confirm in the dialog. Deleting a tag does not delete the bookmarks that carried it.

The number beside each tag row is how many bookmarks carry it, excluding bookmarks in Recently Deleted.
